Located in the north of Karnataka State quite close to the Maharashtra border is the city of Belgaum. The name Belgaum comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Velugrama’ which means ‘Bamboo Village’. It is located at the foothills of the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats and is called the ‘Sugar Bowl of Karnataka’ thanks to its massive sugarcane cultivation and production in its heyday. The city is located 502 km from the state capital, Bangalore and about 125 km away from Goa. Belgaum’s economy is mainly fueled by vegetables, fish, poultry, mining production, wood, meat, and fruits. In addition to this, the Government of Karnataka considered making Belgaum the second capital of the state and a second administrative building Suvarna Vidhana Soudha was opened in 2012. The city is well connected to neighbouring cities by air, road, and rail.
